    It’s time to hit play

Medibank hopes to encourage healthier habits through innovative methods.

Medibank has a simple dream: to help create a healthier Australia. And we’re starting with the people who need it most – children. This year, we’re investing $500,000 across a selection of community projects designed to get our nation’s youth offline and back outdoors. And you have the chance to vote on what you think will work.

For many of us, the last time we untangled ourselves from work emails and beeping phones long enough to get outdoors, it was for the sake of our kids. And even then, those moments are rare. It comes as little surprise then, that we are instilling our sedentary and unhealthy habits on the children around us.

One in four children in Australia is obese. Obesity, even in children, means that you are holding over 20% more than the normal amount of body fat, and are putting yourself at medical risk and discomfort at managing day to day tasks. Now consider that two in three adults – these children’s parents and role models – are obese in our country.

“The Medibank Community Fund is inviting Australians to help decide which projects will get the funding green light.”

What if parents could be reminded just how much fun playing outdoors really is? Then they could begin to encourage their children to go offline, outside, and into a healthier way of life.

To kick off the games, we decided to begin with a toy – a rather large toy. Across one of Melbourne’s iconic alleyways, sandwiched between two graffiti-covered city walls, we built a platform. Just an unassuming platform from afar, but as people approached, it lit up with an adult-sized hopscotch square. Cue delighted giggles and shocked looks – yes, that’s right! We’re inviting you to play.

It’s nothing short of a joy to watch the inhibition melt away, and the game work its magic:  just for a moment, adults become kids again.

We’re on a mission to support programs around Australia to help kids become more active. There are 19 shortlisted projects submitted from around Australia, and the Medibank Community Fund is inviting Australians to help decide which projects will get the funding green light.
