    Inside Out Organic Soup Kitchen

Providing nourishing meals, a warm space and community support: how IOOSK heal from the inside out.

Inside Out Organic Soup Kitchen in Sydney’s Kings Cross offers a weekly dinner and a warm, safe place for people in the community who need it most. The philosophy is “healing from the inside out”, and since opening in 2011, IOOSK’s mission has flourished to include other projects beyond the soup kitchen, such as an outreach cooking program, a rooftop kitchen garden and a pilot horticultural therapy program.

Now, IOOSK has launched another program that you can get involved in, simply by buying a delicious soup. Two Good Soups offers comforting, healthy soups in a ‘suspended’ soup deal, where each soup sold to the public is matched by a soup donated to domestic violence shelters, young mums at a refuge and visitors at IOOSK. With chef Greg Doyle on board, Two Good Soups has the support of the cooking world behind it, so keep an eye out so you too can help make a difference.

“This is why our kitchen exists” – one volunteer’s story

Inside Out Organic Soup Kitchen was a recipient of a 2013 Medibank Community Grant, a funding boost that allowed their work to continue and grow. This year, IOOSK sent us the following story…

“Last Wednesday night, after we had run out of food, a young homeless girl turned up saying she was hungry and hadn’t eaten well for a couple of days. After a short while she told me she had just had a miscarriage. We made her a sandwich using food left over from the lunch service and just talked with her.

“I stayed back after everyone had left and chatted with her some more, gave her a towel for a shower and waited for her to wash before she returned into the night. Who knows where she was going – I’m sure she didn’t.

“This is why our kitchen exists. This is why I am so thankful for your support of our kitchen. It was 30 minutes of my time. We didn’t change anything for her. We weren’t able to really help her. We stood beside her, we gave her the best we could and for the shortest moment we showed her she was worthy of someone’s time and love.”

Inside Out Organic Soup Kitchen is open for dinner in Kings Cross each Wednesday night from 5:30 – 8 pm. If you would like to volunteer and make a difference contact IOOSK via refugeegarden@gmail.com or Facebook
