Iconic public swimming pools around the world

Summer is all about the annual pilgrimage to the public pool, and these ones certainly make a splash

Icebergs – Bondi, NSW

As ‘Sydney’ as the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, this jaw-dropping swimming pool is a magnet for tourists and locals. Juxtaposed against Bondi Beach’s crashing waves and occasional dolphins, it’s a spectacular spot for a summer dip.

Kitsilano Pool – Vancouver

The city’s only outdoor saltwater pool, Kitsilano is prettily situated right on the banks of the water with views of the surrounding mountains. A whopping 137m, it provides plenty of splashing space for swimmers and is open in the summer months only.

Basin swimming pool – Cataract Gorge, Tasmania

With the pristine surrounds of Cataract Gorge and quaint chairlift overhead, this outdoor swimming pool is perfectly situated for summertime splashing. While in the drink, take some time to explore the nearby walking trails and suspension bridge around the Gorge.

Barton Springs – Austin, Texas

Grab a spot on the hill, unpack a picnic and escape the searing Texan summer by floating down this 900-foot long pool in the city’s Zilker Park. Fed from underground springs, it’s a refreshing plunge well worth the $3.00 adult admission.

North Sydney Olympic pool – Sydney

It’s hard to beat a lazy backstroke while looking up at the impressive steelwork of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Cooling off Sydneysiders since 1936, this art deco-style pool has been a hotbed of world records and swimming champions.

Brockwell Lido – London

While England’s summers can be all over the shop, when it’s a hot day you can count on Brockwell Lido getting a good crowd. First opened in the ‘30s, it’s a beautiful old-fashioned, unheated swimming pool that has been cooling down Londoners for decades.
