I is for influenza

Influenza is a highly contagious virus that produces the classic ‘flu’ symptoms.

Influenza can cause severe illness in babies, elderly people, pregnant women and in people whose immunity is already compromised, and deaths do occur every year. While for most people influenza can be relatively mild and recovery fairly quick, just like a very bad cold, it can be entirely avoidable by having a flu vaccine.

Immunisation, or the ‘flu shot’, can play a significant role in the prevention of the flu, in particular for vulnerable groups.

Influenza viruses have the habit of changing regularly, so that every year slightly different strains appear which we may not be fully protected against. This is why a new vaccine is required every year.

Having a flu vaccine every year also helps build our immunity against major changes in the virus, which can occur from time to time, and cause new pandemics. It also means that we are not the cause of spreading the annual strains to family, friends and workmates.

Travel Doctor TMVC stocks the up-to-date influenza vaccine, and it is strongly recommended for international travellers as well.
