How yoga can change your life

Corrine has cleared up her skin, lost weight, toned up and improved her mental health with yoga.

Why did you decide to start yoga last year?

I was encouraged by a friend who observed that I was too focused on the future, and always thinking about my next move rather than enjoying the now. Recognising this truth, I saw that it was time to try something that would serve my body and mind. I had always been very active but felt little connection between my physical self and my mind in activities like running and boxing. As I get older I guess I am more in search of something that aligns me with my true self; that encourages exploration of who I am and what I am truly capable of.

Had you ever had any experience practising yoga before?

I had never practised yoga before March last year. I always thought it was too passive and slow for me. For most of my life I searched for high intensity activities but nothing really resonated on a deeper level. It was all about ego and body image before yoga.

Yoga is the perfect intersection of interaction between your mind, body and spirit. It has taught me to be present; to love myself unconditionally and to open my heart without fear.”

Tell us about the type of yoga you practise.

I practise Vinyasa yoga which is a Power Flow Yoga. Vinyasa means ‘breath-synchronized movement’. Vinyasa movements are smoothly flowing and almost dance-like. It’s a very physically demanding practice in a studio set to 37 degrees. The heat makes my muscles supple and therefore I get into deeper shapes and poses. I practise at One Hot Yoga and Pilates in South Yarra. The space and the instructors are inspiring.

What sort of positive impact has it had on your body?

In terms of my physical body, I have lost 8kgs, my skin has never been clearer and I have excellent posture. I am the strongest and fittest I have ever been. It really does feel like a little gift I give myself each day.

Tell us about the other positive ways it has enriched your life beyond the physical?

Yoga is the perfect intersection of interaction between your mind, body and spirit. It has taught me to be present; to love myself unconditionally and to open my heart without fear. When I’m on the mat I realise the importance of just breathing and that everything else is a beautiful distraction.
