With fruit an essential component of a healthy, balanced diet, it’s important to encourage kids to eat a variety of fresh fruit everyday. Packed with vitamins, nutrients and dietary fibre, fruit tastes great and can be enjoyed so many different ways. Here are six ways to encourage kids to regularly eat fruit and help them grow up understanding it should be a part of any healthy diet.
1. Include them
Let kids pick out fresh fruit at the grocer and have a chat about what they’re selecting, how it will taste and when you will eat it.
2. Join them
Prepare a fruit salad and sit down together to enjoy it. It’s great to be a positive role model and if kids see you eating fruit regularly, it’s easier for them to understand why it should become part of their lives.
3. Make a meal out of it
Spoon out a little yoghurt for dipping, lay out a fresh fruit platter and make it a fun experience. Explain the order of how you select the fruit, dip it in the yoghurt and eat it. Add a little bowl of muesli or cereal to the end of the process and create a DIY fruit parfait.
4. Mix it up
Instead of slicing up an apple or banana, add some yoghurt and honey and whip up a creamy banana smoothie. Throw some fresh or frozen berries, yoghurt and apple juice together for a berry smoothie option. Use a fat straw and a clear cup and let kids enjoy the experience of watching the contents go down as they drink.
5. Preparation is key
Have some pre-made fruit salads or bowls of freshly hulled strawberries in the fridge so they’re quick to grab and easy to snack on.
6. Experiment with textures
From poached, pureed, crunchy, mashed and frozen, mix up how fruit is served. Frozen grapes are deliciously cooling in the summer and the different texture will surprise. Add some poached fruits to breakfast cereals, add some egg yolks and milk to mashed banana and bake for a smooth ‘custard’ or just keep it crisp and crunchy.
