F is for football

The benefits of physical activity and social interaction through sport are well documented.

Football is also in full swing at a grass roots level across the nation. It’s never too late to register with your neighbourhood club or head down to support your local team. Even without pulling on the boots, nothing beats having a casual kick with your mates or kids or releasing some energy barracking from the sidelines.

The NAB AFL Auskick program is also underway at local centres around the country. The program provides boys and girls aged between 5 and 12 years old with a fun and safe Australian football experience that introduces them to a lifetime of involvement in the game. As well as learning about the game, the program encourages a healthy lifestyle and helps with the development of children’s personal and social skills.

A new initiative from the AFL is AFL 9’s, a mixed ‘touch football’ alternative game. With no tackling or bumping, AFL 9’s is a great option for people of any age and skill level to be a part of the action.
