With so many studies promoting fish as beneficial for the health of your heart and brain, it is no surprise to read of a study that credits eating fish with a longer life.
Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health explored the potential link between fish consumption and life spans.
The study analysed 16 years of data on nearly 3000 adults aged 65 and up. Blood samples isolated the healthy fatty acids found in fish as a measure of fish consumption (no participants were taking fish-oil supplements).
Researchers found that those with higher levels of healthy fatty acids showed a 35% lower risk of dying from heart disease compared to those with lower levels.
When researchers combined all causes of death, those with the highest levels of healthy fatty acids lived on average two years longer than those with the lowest levels.
Benefits were found with eating two servings of fish per week, in line with dietary recommendations.
