The best things to do in Toronto

From iconic landmarks to indie haunts, local Karla Schaus takes us on a whirlwind tour of Toronto.

1. CN Tower EdgeWalk

Most people feel that they haven’t been to Toronto without a trip to the top of the CN Tower – and I agree. However, there is a new and incredible way to explore this landmark while visiting. Why not walk around the circumference of the roof of the world’s third tallest tower? Now you can get an adrenaline rush like never before when you book a time to do the CN Tower EdgeWalk. Do one thing a day that exhilarates you.

2. Toronto Heli Tours

The best views of the Toronto skyline include our impressive CN Tower landmark. A great way get up close and personal with Toronto is via helicopter. It sounds eccentric, but it’s quite cost efficient and definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity that is attainable with Toronto Heli Tours. With this option, you’re guaranteed to see Toronto unlike most tourists have ever experienced. Once you land, you can hike the Toronto Island trails or take a canoe ride before you board the ferry back from the Island.

3. Art Gallery of Ontario

One of my favourite places to wander is through the Art Gallery of Ontario, located in the Grange Park district. The vast collection contains over 80,000 works of art, and entry fees are low. It also has a section for kids to explore, a café where you can get gelato or espresso, and there is drop-in yoga which takes place in the Galleria Italia. Tours are free with admission, and they run every hour on the hour.

4. West Queen West

For me, Toronto is all about roaming around and finding your own entertainment. One of the best neighbourhoods to explore is West Queen West. You can discover creativity in many forms, as well as a lot of unique shops. My favourite place to stop by for in-and-out healthy food is Bolt Fresh Bar. They make juice to order and have the best acai bowls in the city – make sure you add coconut whipped cream to your order!

5. The Paper Place

There’s a cozy little shop in downtown Toronto called The Paper Place. I love it for many reasons, not just its adorable charm. The Paper Place stocks a variety of decorative paper goods, as well as many unique items for crafts, letter writing, or general organization (think agendas, calendars, stationary). Your hands will get lost wandering over the textures of papers from all over the world, while illuminated by the glow of warm paper lamp lighting.

6. Aroma Espresso Bar

I’m a huge fan of the Aroma Espresso Bar franchise. Aroma originated in Israel, but it is now accessible in Canada, the United States, and abroad. If you’re reading this, you’re probably someone who can appreciate fresh, healthy food and gourmet coffee – and that’s exactly what you get, with a touch of Israeli flare. If you care to take your cappuccino and salad outdoors, the Aroma patios have space to set up for a nice afternoon lunch. In such a vibrant and diverse city, it’s impossible not to feel creative and energised.
