Red Cross: Summer disaster relief

The Red Cross helps to rebuild communities after extensive natural disaster damage.

It’s the darker side of summer – bushfires, floods and other natural disasters that threaten to wreak havoc on our landscape and our family life. Already this summer, multiple disasters have caused widespread disruption to communities across the country.

Bushfires have caused serious damage to areas around Pinery, SA and Esperence, WA, while more recently, fires have raged through Waroona, WA and along VIC’s Great Ocean Road.

Away from the heat, serious flooding has caused widespread disruption and evacuations in NSW and Daly River, NT, while a tornado unexpectedly pummelled Kurnell in Sydney’s south.

Across these diverse emergencies and in all major locations, Red Cross staff and volunteers are on the ground and working hard to help people most in need. They have been supporting evacuated communities in relief and recovery centres, providing valuable psychological first aid to those coming to terms with the disasters, and have been reconnecting friends and family separated by disasters through the Register.Find.Reunite. service.

“Red Cross has been supporting evacuated communities in relief and recovery centres, providing psychological first aid and reconnecting friends and family.”

But for many, the disaster doesn’t end when the fires die down and the floodwater disappears. Disasters can be extremely distressing and recovering from one is often a long, tough journey. In Victoria for example, Red Cross is still there to continue supporting those affected – accompanying people as they revisit their properties, checking on their welfare and working closely with our local, regional and state partners to assist with relief and recovery planning.
