Top tips for getting into your garden

Plan it out: Before you start, plan out your space. Which parts of your garden get the most light? How much space do you have? Will you need planter boxes and pots? These are all good questions to ask before you head to Bunnings.

Light it up: Speaking of light – does your garden get enough light to grow edible plants? Most vegetables, herbs and fruits need at least 6 hours of sun in order to thrive so now might be a good time to think about whether your front yard or back yard is more suitable or if there’s any way you could increase the light fall in your space.

Water, water everywhere: Planning your garden near a water source is vital. Make sure you have a hose that can easily reach your plants, so you don’t have to lug heavy watering cans around every time your plants get thirsty. Having a hose in reach also means you can set up a sprinkler system in the hotter months if you need. Not sure if your plants are thirsty? Stick a finger an inch into the soil (about one knuckle deep). If it comes out dry, it’s time to water!

Solid soil: A good garden begins with great soil. Invest in a nutrient-rich and well-drained soil by mixing some good quality garden soil into the top 6 to 8 inches of your garden soil. If you’re using beds you’ll need a different soil than if you’re planting in pots so be sure to consult someone at your local garden centre!

Do your research: Choose your plants wisely; this will mean doing your homework and some degree of trial and error. For sun drenched courtyards choose heat tolerant plants and for spacious areas go for things like pumpkins and melons that need lots of space to thrive. It also pays to research what each plant needs in order to grow – some will need lots of watering and care whilst others might benefits from a less frequent feeding cycle.
