Vessyl: the smart cup that analyses your drinks

A new smart cup tells you the nutritional content of your beverages to help you make smarter choices

Seven years in the making, Vessyl is a unique drinking cup that uses internal sensors to analyse the nutritional content of whatever you’re drinking.

Created by US health and lifestyle startup Mark One, the slim and minimalist cup features a digital display that tells you things like the calories, fat, sugar, protein and caffeine content of your drink, which can then help you to make smarter decisions about your daily beverage choices.

The cup itself is sleek and elegant, available in black, white or silver with eight lid colour options. Designed like a small Thermos flask, it holds 385ml of liquid with a spill-proof lid, and is insulated to keep your drink hot or cold. The inside is made from a specially-designed non-stick glass that should make it easy to wash.

What else does it do?

So how smart is this smart cup, really? Well, it can tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi by analysing the sugar content, so it has some pretty strong capabilities.

Vessyl can also:

  • Keep you hydrated. Vessyl can estimate your hydration needs and adjust them in real-time based on your activities and whereabouts. It then tracks how much water you’re drinking throughout the day and lets you know how you’re doing meeting your hydration needs.
  • Monitor your caffeine intake. If you drink coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverages, Vessyl can track how much caffeine you’ve consumed throughout the day – so you can see when you’ve had enough!
  • Track your goals. Everyone will have different motivations for analysing their drinks, so Vessyl lets you choose what “lens” you want to see your data through. For example, you can set your goal to lose weight, stay hydrates, regulate sugar or sleep better. Your progress towards these goals update in real-time on the cup and in the app.
  • Sync with your phone and other gadgets. Charged wirelessly, Vessyl links to your smartphone, where you can track info using the Vessyl app as well as syncing to other popular fitness-tracking devices.
