Kale + Brussels Sprouts = Kalettes

Our favourite greens just got trendier with the birth of a new super-vegetable.

Kale and Brussles sprouts have been basking in the adoration of health fanatics and foodies for some times now. Now, the two nutritious greens have been mashed together into one super-vegetable known as kalettes, developed by British vegetable breeding company Tozer Seeds.

15 years in the making, the new vegetable is “a fresh fusion of sweet and nutty, blooming with the best flavors of kale and Brussels sprouts”, as described by the Kalettes’ Facebook page. The versatile green can be steamed, roasted or eaten raw in salads, much in the same way that its parent vegetables can be enjoyed.

The creation of a new vegetable

Making an entirely new vegetable takes a lot of time and effort. The last new vegetable to be commercially introduced was Broccolini, which was developed in 1993 by Sakata Seed Company in Japan.

Dr. Jamie Claxton of Tozer Seeds started experimenting with mixing brassica lines in 1995, mashing up kale and Brussels sprouts to create a vegetable with a core similar to Brussels but soft, kale-like leaves. From there, he and the team tweaked the flavour, worked on varieties with longer growing seasons, and tried to make the vegetable look more attractive.

The new fancy green was first named flower sprouts in England, but when taking the product to the USA the name kalettes was chosen to capitalise on the current obsession with the health benefits of kale.

Kalettes are expected to appear in US supermarkets in the coming months – and we’re hoping it won’t be too long before we get to try them on Australian shores.
