National Ride2School Day

Get the kids on their bikes and encourage a more active lifestyle this National Ride2School Day.

To maintain good health, children should aim to get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, as recommended by Australia’s Physical Activity Guidelines. One fun way to contribute to that goal is to encourage children to ride their bike to school.

As long as your child is well aware of safety precautions, has a bike that fits them and is in good working condition, and has had enough riding practice to feel confident, riding to school can be a great way to fit more healthy activity into their day.

National Ride2School Day is an initiative of the Bicycle Network, and is all about celebrating active travel within the school day and encouraging those who haven’t started to give it a go.

Why encourage your child to ride to school?

  • Cycling is great for improving fitness and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Riding to school can make kids more likely to arrive feeling refreshed, alert and ready to learn.
  • It starts to foster an awareness of environmentally friendly living.
  • It can help build confidence, independence and awareness of road safety.
  • It can be a fun social activity if you live near some of your child’s classmates.

Friday 13 March 2015 marks the ninth National Ride2School Day, and it is expected that over 250,000 Australian students, will ride, walk, scoot or skate to school. Make sure your child has a good understanding of bike safety before encouraging them to ride.
