What to bring
Pack your bag with swimmers, towels, goggles, sunscreen, food, lots of water and plenty of energy – there’s so much to do, whether you’re competing or not!
Before the carnival
This year there’s a new race open to the whole community, the Medibank Ocean Swim Run. This event is open to anyone aged 5 to 60+, and takes place before each Wave Warriors carnival from 6.30 to 8.30 am.
Designed to be social and accessible, the race involves a 200 m swim and a 2 km run (or a 400 m wade and 400 m run for kids aged 5-10). It’s a perfect opportunity for parents and families to get in a quick, fun challenge before the big day starts.
When you arrive
If you’re not taking part in the Medibank Ocean Swim Run, families arrive at the surf club at 8 am to collect registration bags for the kids. Bags are packed with a Surf Life Saving Australia-approved fluoro pink rash vest, a Medibank beach ball, temporary tattoos, stickers and a wristband.
Once you’ve collected your gear, you can head to the beach and set up for the day under your club tent or a tent provided by Wave Warriors.
The Wave Warriors carnival usually kicks off at 9am.
Events are run over two water areas, so that while one age group is competing, the other age group is being marshalled to get ready for their race. That means there is never any downtime between races – anything to reduce the boredom of waiting around!
First off are board races, then swim races, beach sprints (including the mums and dads’ sprints) and the Medibank Movers relay, followed by the Ironman and Ironwoman race.
The atmosphere is electric. There is a buzz everywhere on the beach – from the announcer interviewing competitors, to the cheers and shouts of the races, the background music, the activities in the Medibank #GenBetter Active Zone, and the happy and proud parents of the competitors.
The day wraps up at around 3pm with the presentation of prizes, including a random prize draw and an award for the most outstanding competitor of the day.
More fun and games
The Medibank #GenBetter Active Zone is a space for all participants and spectators to have fun, keeping the siblings of competing children entertained.
The zone is set up with badminton sets, totem pole tennis sets, hoola hoops, a tug-o-war rope and more, with plenty of games and competitions to get involved in.
For the parents
Parents can relax in a shaded, fenced off space that gives you a great view of your children competing.
Food and drink
Host surf clubs usually set up a barbecue and drink stall for the day. Most surf clubs also have a café, where other food and coffee is available – otherwise, each location is only a short walk away from other cafes.
What if it rains?
Junior Ironmen and Ironwomen are prepared for anything! The event will only be postponed if the swell is unsafe, so bring an umbrella and beach blanket if it looks drizzly.
