Getting wild on the river

If you’re looking for adventure, lake and riverside camping trips offer loads of water-based fun.

From the Murray River to the Berry Springs, take your pick of gorgeous waterside destinations and get ready to get your heart racing.

Water sports instructor Brett Sands shares some background on his passion for and his favourite spots for a day on the water.

How did you become a water sports instructor?

I went the USA when I was 15 to be coached at ski school and I thought, wow these guys are coaching as a job – I want to open up my own school. A year later, when I was old enough to get a boat license, Brett Sands Watersports opened in January 1986.

Do you teach all year round?

We teach from September to the end of April at our location in Moama, and in the winter months we travel from time to time coaching anywhere in the world.

What are some of the health benefits of water sports?

It builds great strength along with increasing your cardiovascular fitness. Also it’s great for your balance and coordination. It’s outdoors and done with family and friends, so that’s got to be healthy for you.

What are some of your favourite Australian rivers and lakes for a day out on the water over summer?

Murray River at Echuca/Moama, Ovens and Murray rivers at Bundalong, Berry Springs man-made ski lakes in the Northern Territory.

How has the Murray River changed since you grew up?

The river hasn’t changed so much over the years in Echuca/Moama, but it has become more popular over time with more river users. Also, people have developed their riverfront properties with retaining walls and beautiful lawns.
