Friendships, fitness and finding the right fit
For Sydney-based Ngan, her local Live Life Get Active community is a constant inspiration — even beyond the workout.
One year after joining her local Live Life Get Active camp, Ngan’s enthusiasm for the organisation has only grown. The Sydney-based mum of one credits the free, community fitness camps with helping her lose weight and gain friends. After losing six kilos in six months, Ngan makes it down to join the events even when the weather looks daunting - “Sometimes it rains, but I still turn up!”

Like-minded and local
Ngan first heard about the organisation through a recommendation from a friend and thought to herself, “Why not? I’ll give it a go.” After hearing about the free, outdoor fitness classes, she easily found a local camp in the Sydney suburb of Rouse Hill. The daily classes quickly proved to be a perfect fit, and Ngan has been a committed member ever since.
For Ngan, finding somewhere to workout with like-minded (and like-familied) people meant that her lifestyle didn’t suffer. Like so many other Aussie parents, the idea of taking the time to focus on her own fitness seemed to be impossible. Having a lifestyle that included caring for her own health as well as that of her family’s seemed difficult at first, but joining Live Life Get Active helped her to find the perfect balance.
The camp she originally joined fit the bill, and the space grew as the group did. Starting out with boxing sessions, and then finding her groove in cardio-based workouts, Ngan now attends up to four days a week. The daily events are a perfect fit for her routine, as Ngan drops her daughter at school in the morning before heading straight to the park. She’s even found that being in the area so often comes with an added bonus — “I go there shopping all the time! It’s handy!”
Friendships and freedom
With her group fluctuating between 12 to 30 members on any given day, Ngan has found a strong community in her fellow Live Life Get Active attendees. When she’s asked about the program, one of her first responses is to tell people about the relationships she’s forged through her local group. “The people you meet...we just have common interests and have built friendships. We organise dinners, things like that. It’s become a social network. A group of friends that enjoy and do similar things.”
Ngan’s love for the Live Life Get Active community also springs from the deep sense of trust and welcoming that she sees at every session. She now laughs about how shy and intimidated she used to feel when going to the gym, and says that there’s no sense of judgement in her camp. “Here, we encourage everyone from the moment they first start. [We say], ‘don’t worry, you’ll pick up!’ Just do whatever you can.”
A healthy frame of mind
Ngan says that she encourages her friends who ask about the program to think about setting realistic goals and expectations for their own health. She has been amazed by her own weight loss (“This time, it’s not coming back!”) and improvements to her overall fitness, but knows that the real benefit of joining the community lies in holistic changes. She’s also found that forging friendships in her group has led to her being mindful of her health outside of the scheduled camps, and many other members feel the same way. All in all, Ngan says she doesn’t have a single regret about becoming a Live Life Get Active member. Well, maybe just one… “I wish I’d done it when I was younger!”
