The 10 best hiking trails around Australia

Here are some of the most picturesque hiking trails around Australia.

The transition from winter to spring in the vast Australian mountains and forests provides us with some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. Surrounded by melting snow and ice and the colour, fertility and wonder of native flora and fauna, spring is the perfect time to get back to nature.

Australian spring hiking trails are some of the best in the world. In Victoria alone there are more than 200 trails in over 30 National Parks, ranging from 30-minute walks to 60-day treks. Whether you’re hiking on foot, hitting the bike paths or opting for a scenic horseback ride, there are plenty of trails to suit every springtime adventurer.

1. Toolangi State Forest, Victoria. It’s worth it just to see the Kalatha Giant tree, one of the largest in the state. Try tackling the Blue Mountain Ascent to experience some incredible views of the Yarra Valley.

2. Dandenong Ranges, Victoria. Try any hiking track, focusing on the Kokoda trail, Sherbrooke Falls, Olinda Falls or the Lyrebird Hike. Go back in time and learn about the hardships fought by our brave soldiers in WWII on the 1000 Steps hike.

3. Triplet Falls in the Great Otway National Park , Victoria. While in the area, cruise along the Great Ocean Road for a spectacular coastal drive.

4. Noojee Trestle Bridge, Victoria. Scoot along the former railway line in country Victoria or go a bit further and explore Toorongo Falls.

5. Bibbulmun Track, Western Australia. This is one of the most recognised walks in the state.

6. Margaret River Wine Region Trails, Western Australia. Start from the beautiful Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, pass by the limestone “pinnacles” and head on to the famous whale lookout.

7. Southern Forests Trails, The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, Western Australia. Considered the world’s longest tree top walkway, nothing says springtime more than walking within the trees canopies 40 meters above the ground.

8. Danger Falls, Armidale, New South Wales. Crossing the Oxley River, this hike is full of native Australian birds and bush.

9. Three Sisters Hiking Trails, Katoomba, New South Wales. Experience one of Australia’s most famous rock formations within beautiful forest surroundings.

10. Lord Howe Island, New South Wales. A hiker’s wonderland – you have the ability to walk almost anywhere on the island. Immerse yourself in Lord Howe Island’s famous twin peaks, breathtaking views, natural forest and marine life.

Don’t stop there – some trails are only 45 minutes away from our city centres. It’s free, rewarding and an opportunity to get active while experiencing something special with friends and family.
