    B is for breath

    Apart from keeping us alive, breathing is central to many practices of meditation and mindfulness.

    With religious origins, today meditation and mindfulness is also used more widely as a tool to promote good health, balance and to manage stress. Essentially meditation and mindfulness involves relaxation and breathing techniques that aim to clear your mind, promote a sense of calm and a heightened sense of awareness.

    There are many different types of meditation and mindfulness and it is worth exploring the different options to find out which one works best for you. Whatever technique you employ, it helps to have a quiet, comfortable and distraction-free place to practise for between 5-30 minutes. Meditating at a consistent time each day assists in helping it become a regular and beneficial habit. You can practise meditation and mindfulness by yourself or you may prefer to attend a class and be directed by an experienced teacher.

    Regular meditation, mindfulness and breathing techniques offer many health benefits, possibly contributing to reduced stress, healthy blood pressure and increased awareness and alertness.
