Australians unaware when it comes to diabetes

Almost half of global diabetes sufferers go undiagnosed.

Diabetes affects over 3.6 million people in Australia, yet according to new research conducted by the Medibank 24/7 Health Advice Line, the majority of Australians do not know its major symptoms.

Exposing a link between the lack of awareness of diabetes and lower income levels, the latest research indicates 1 in 10 low-income Australian households do not know any of the risk factors associated with the disease. In contrast, almost all those with high household incomes could identify major risk factors.

Awareness of risk factors is vital, particularly with diabetes Type 2, where improved diet and increased exercise are key factors in slowing the progression of the disease by up to 71%.

Dr Ian Boyd, Medibank 24/7 Health Advice Line Medical Director stresses the importance of lifestyle choices in helping to minimise the risk and progession of diabetes.

“A healthy diet is one of the key ways to both prevent the onset of diabetes Type 2 and also manage it. At Medibank we believe in supporting our members to make healthy living choices and now reward our members with triple points for every dollar they spend on fresh fruit and vegetables and frozen vegetables at Coles.”

Almost half of global diabetes sufferers go undiagnosed.
