Medibank member Jane was eligible to participate in Healthy Weight for Life’s Integrated Osteoarthritis Management Program. The specialised knee and hip arthritis program seeks to strengthen joint muscles, introduce a range of land based and motion exercise, implement pain management strategies and improve nutrition and weight loss. By taking part in the program, it’s hoped participants will get back to doing simple activities like climbing stairs, getting in and out of a car and taking trips to the shops that were an integral part of their pain lives before joint pain.
Jane provides an insight into how the program helped her lose weight and treat her knee pain, enabling her to exercise and actively play with her grandson.
Why did you decide to get involved with the program?
I thought it was a great opportunity to try and lose some weight and get fit after my knee surgery and many attempts of weight loss.
What were your expectations going into the program?
I wasn’t quite sure, I hoped to feel healthier and be able to move freely, lose weight and enjoy playing with my first grandchild.
Had you tried other programs before?
Yes many programs. I had lost weight but once I went off the program I had put the weight back on plus more, I felt very hungry with little or no support.
What did the Integrated Osteoarthritis Management program involve?
The program involved being strong, committed and was, at times, difficult. Three shakes per day, with fruit and salad in between the shakes. Moving to two shakes and then down to one while slowly increasing normal food intake using the menu plans provided.
What were the key things you learnt from completing the program?
The biggest things I learnt was what food groups went together, portion size, and that if you put your mind to something it can be achieved.
What did you enjoy about completing the program?
Losing weight, being able to move freely without too much pain and most of all being able to play and crawl with my grandson.
Having now completed the program, what changes have you maintained in your lifestyle?
Weekly shopping, appropriate serving sizes and eating small but regular meals.
What have been the positives in completing the program?
Weight loss, happiness, family support and being able to enjoy exercise without a lot of pain in my knees. I still cannot believe that losing 10 kilos would make so much difference to someone’s life. You hear about it but don’t really believe it, until you do it yourself.
Thanks again for the opportunity to participate in this wonderful program.
Don’t let joint pain get the better of you.
