What man flu?

Do men exaggerate the symptoms of the common cold? The research is in!

New research has emerged that disproves the ‘man flu’ myth, asserting that men do not exaggerate symptoms of the common cold and, in fact, do quite the opposite.

The Medibank 24/7 Health Advice Line surveyed 1061 people and 83% of men said they aren’t badly affected by colds and less than one in ten expect to be looked after.

The research shows only 27% of Australian men tell their partner if they have a cold, dismissing the cliché that they overplay their symptoms, choosing instead to remain quiet about illness. In contrast, call data shows women are twice as likely to call the advice line to discuss symptoms.

Reflecting on the findings Dr Georgia Karabatsos, Medibank 24/7 Health Advice Line Medical Director says, “the common cold and ‘man flu’ are often joked about, but for some men this can lead to them feeling unable to discuss their health. So while it’s not necessary to seek advice for every cold or flu, it’s essential men feel able to discuss more serious symptoms.”

As we mark Men’s Health Week, an initiative to promote physical, emotional and social health amongst Australian men, the Medibank 24/7 Health Advice Line is encouraging men to speak up about health issues like heart disease, stroke risk, prostate health as well as mental health concerns.
