Take your lunchbreak – for your health

Beyondblue has called on Australians to make a new work resolution – to reclaim your lunch break.

Do you find yourself cutting your lunchbreak short, putting it off until mid-afternoon, or just eating at your desk? Time to take back your lunchbreak and revitalise your work day, making sure you take some time to move around, clear your head and enjoy some space from your work.

By doing so, beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell says, you can reduce your stress levels and improve your overall mental health and wellbeing. “We know from research that it’s really important to have regular breaks during the day, to get up, to move around,” she says. “If you don’t, both your physical and your mental health suffers, and interestingly, so does your productivity.”

The call to arms for the lunchbreak movement comes after a study commissioned by beyondblue and the Australia Institute suggested that 3.8 million Australians do not take a lunchbreak, and that 72 per cent of those who do are either eating at their desks or just ducking out for a quick bite rather than taking a meaningful, refreshing break.
