R U OK? Day

Thursday 12 September is R U OK? Day, a reminder of the life-altering impact of a conversation.

This week we celebrate R U OK? Day, a national day of action encouraging everyone to check in with those around them by asking, ‘are you ok?’

Founded on the basis that connection, honest conversations and supporting those around us can change a life, R U OK? Day has been running since 2009. A body of research linking supportive social relationships with protective factors in suicide prevention is emerging and R U OK? Day is about reaching out and being that support network.

For co-founder Janina Nearn, the foundation is helping to improve the health of Australians by strengthening informal community care and building the capacity of people to have regular, meaningful conversations.

“By building this capacity and enhancing a sense of belonging across the community, we aim to inspire all people to proactively connect with each other. We believe that all people can make a difference and have the power to change a life by asking the question ‘are you ok?’ with positive intent.”

The R U OK? Foundation website provides some meaningful ways to start a conversation with someone who may be going through a tough time. Visit ruokday.com for details.
