T is for travel advice

be. A-Z Guide — Posted 30/07/13

With almost 8 million overseas departures last year, Australians are extremely active travellers. Unfortunately, a large number of these travellers will be ill along the way and most fail to think about health before travelling.

Illness in travellers is frequent, studies indicate an average of 50% of all travellers have some sort of travel-related illness with the rate rising directly with the length of the trip. Pre-travel advice involves learning about potential risks of illness, how illness is caught and how it can be avoided. Not all trips are the same and advice and recommendations need to be tailored to the person and the likelihood of disease.

Traveller’s diarrhoea (TD) is the most common travel health problem experienced by about 40% of all international travellers. Advice concerning eating and drinking safely is important as well as instruction on how to deal with it when it occurs.

Hopefully by receiving good advice, travellers can avoid risky situations and prevent illness. This in turn means less emphasis is placed on vaccinations and more on knowledge of how potential health risks can be minimized.
