Setting up camp

Features — Posted 02/12/13

Off on a camping trip? Here’s our guide to setting up to sleep under the stars.

Before you hit the shops to load up on camping gear, think about the basics for a comfortable night’s sleep. Ask around to see if there’s any gear you can borrow from friends and if you do buy new gear, make sure you try it out before you leave home.

The basics

  • Tent – comfortable and large enough to sleep all
  • Groundsheets – to keep you dry and protect the tent lining from the ground
  • Bedding – so you can doze off cozy and warm
  • Torch or lantern – to stop you stumbling around in the dark

Pitching your tent

  • Try to set up camp in daylight.
  • Pick a spot sheltered from wind by shrubs.
  • Don’t set up camp under trees in case strong winds bring them down.
  • Don’t pick the lowest ground to set up camp as any rain that falls will collect there.
  • Pitch your tent on level, firm ground.

Hardcore gear

Kathmandu has a great range of heavy-duty camping gear that is packed with features, lightweight and made from durable fabrics. Here are a few picks.

  • Kathmandu self-inflating mat – perfect for resting weary limbs after a day out hiking
  • Kathmandu Globe sleeping bag – lightweight and great for summer, complete with a valuables pocket and draw cord
  • Kathmandu Roamer chair – a handy, lightweight folding chair that comes with a carry bag
