9 healthy things to do in New York City

Lifestyle — Posted 23/06/15

Staying fit, vibrant and healthy in the concrete jungle of New York City is a cinch. Melbourne expat Alice shows us her favourite healthy hotspots.

1. Body By Simone

There seems to be a new boutique fitness studio opening every day in New York City. From aerial yoga to aquacycling, there is a huge array of workouts to choose from. My favorite is Body By Simone, or BBS for short. Developed by Simone De La Rue (another Aussie expat!) the classes fuse high-energy dance, yoga and pilates. My favourite class is their signature ‘Dance Cardio’ class, an hour of non-stop dance, and ‘Tramp Cardio’, a full body workout on mini trampolines!

2. Hu Kitchen

One of the few 100% paleo restaurants in America, Hu Kitchen never disappoints. Offering made-to-order breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes, fresh pressed juices and organic coffee, wine, and beer, you can find something great at Hu no matter what time of day! Their organic rotisserie chicken and wild elk burger are two of my favourites, but everything they make is delicious. Make sure you also pick up some of their Brooklyn-made paleo and vegan chocolate bars on the way out!

3. Bryant Park

While Central Park is the most famous park in NYC, Bryant Park is definitely my favourite. Situated behind the grand New York Public Library, it is the perfect place to relax, catch up with friends, or enjoy one of the many complimentary activities they offer. During the spring a summer months they offer yoga on the lawn every Thursday evening. There is nothing quite like finding a moment of stillness amongst hundreds of others in the middle of Midtown Manhattan!

4. SLT

SLT, or Strengthen Lengthen and Tone, is another workout favourite of mine. The 50-minute class performed on a megaformer (an amped up version of a pilates reformer) will have your core on fire and is definitely one of the most challenging workouts I’ve done in the city! They have four locations in Manhattan and class sizes are small, so the instructor always has eyes on you.

5. Union Square Green Market

One of the only farmers’ markets that is open year-round in NYC, the Union Square green market has over 100 regional farmers selling everything from fruits and vegetables to cheeses, jams, breads, meats and flowers. If you’re visiting in autumn, grab a cup of hot apple cider while you browse the tables.

6. Aire Ancient Baths

After a long day pounding the NYC pavement, Aire is the ultimate place to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Based on the ancient Roman Bath experience, you are truly transported to another time when you descend into the basement of this old Textile factory in TriBeCa.

7. Trapeze School of New York at Chelsea Piers

Chelsea Piers is a complex on Manhattan’s West Side that has something for everybody. Head to the driving range to hit golf balls straight into the Hudson River, learn to skate on the ice rink, or for something entirely different, stroll down to Pier 40 and take a flying trapeze class with the TSNY. It is one of the most terrifying yet thrilling things I have done (and the view of NYC from the top is pretty great!) and

8. Smorgasburg

There are so many incredible food options in New York that it is often hard to choose where to eat. Smorgasburg solves that! A food market on the Brooklyn waterfront, it offers incredible bites from 100+ vendors and amazing views of Manhattan. I can never pass up a Red Hook Lobster Roll, however if you have the patience wait in line and grab the infamous Ramen Burger – I hear it’s incredible!

9. The Highline

The Highline is a ‘park in the sky’ – an elevated freight rail line that has been transformed into a public park. From Stargazing to Latin dance, meditation to poetry, Friends of The Highline always has a range of incredible offerings on the calendar. In the summer I love to lie out on one of the unique lounge chairs on the sundeck watching the sun set over the Hudson.
