Eye tests for children made fun

Introducing Penny the Pirate, an interactive children’s book and app by OPSM that doubles as a simple, at-home vision screening tool.

Meet Penny, a swashbuckling character created for OPSM who is helping parents get a better understanding of their children’s vision.

Penny the Pirate, created by renowned children’s author and illustrator Kevin Waldron and developed in consultation with the optometry and vision sciences department at the University of Melbourne, is an engaging, illustrated storybook that doubles as a simple vision screening tool.

Written into the fun and colourful story of Penny are three tests – for distance vision, colour vision and depth perception – which children complete using an eye patch, a spyglass and 3D glasses.

“Sometimes it’s hard for child to articulate they are having trouble with their vision so we recommend this as a screening technique that is fun and interactive,” says Robyn Weinberg, director of OPSM’s charity arm, OneSight.

 “We usually find one in five children has never had an eye test and one in six will present with a potential eye problem. All children should have an eye test every two years.

“Penny the Pirate does not replace going to the optometrist but it certainly highlights for a parent the potential need to visit an optometrist.”
