Pairing mindfulness with photography to become ‘photopresent’

The message prefacing Matthew Johnstone’s sixth book, Capturing Mindfulness, perfectly embodies his journey to become what he terms ‘photopresent’: “Your typical day is neither beautiful nor ugly, good nor bad. It’s purely as you see it.”

Mindfulness is a way of focusing your attention and being aware. Photography is about capturing a moment. ‘Capturing mindfulness’ helps people discover how to become present through photography and use it as a tool to harness their attention and focus.

Enmeshed in Matthew’s book, the combination encourages us to find beauty where it doesn’t typically exist, take time to savour what others can’t see and capture a fleeting moment before it disappears. “I also call this an ‘excited quiet’; it’s when I slow right down and it’s just me and what’s in front of me,” says Matthew.

Here we’ve picked a selection of beautiful images from Matthew’s book that guide us to see the extraordinary in the ordinary and those moments no one else can.
