Z is for zingiber
Fresh ginger rhizome, or Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis Recens, is used in traditional Chinese medicine in combination with other herbs to treat colds, flu, coughs and digestive upsets, especially where nausea and vomiting are involved.
Warm and mildly spicy in nature, fresh ginger is used in herbal prescriptions to harmonise the more severe flavours and actions of stronger medicinals. Randomised controlled trials support its use as an individual herb to prevent nausea. Zingiber is also used as an anti-inflammatory, a pain remedy, and a cholesterol-lowering herb.
Chinese medicine practioner Katie Molloy recommends to make a simple and delicious ginger tea, place 3-4 slices of fresh ginger root in a mug and cover with 200mL boiling water for 3-5 minutes before drinking. This is a wonderful digestive aid, especially in winter as it is warming in nature.
