Immune system hit by fast food consumption

News — Posted 25/03/13

What is the impact of fast food on our immune system?

While the potential link between eating fast food three or more times a week and obesity is acknowledged, the impact it can have on our immune system is lesser known. A study published in the journal ‘Thorax’, identifies a link between regular fast food consumption and an increased risk of asthma, eczema and rhinitis among children and teenagers. Participants in the study (319,000 teens aged between 13 -14 and 181,000 children aged between 7 and 8) answered questions, together with their parents, about their health condition and diet. Those who ate fast food three or more times a week were linked to a 39% increase in severe asthma in teens and a 27% increased risk in children. The benefit of eating fruit to protect against these disorders among all age groups also emerged from the study.
