Flu risk cut by exercise

News — Posted 22/05/14

Do you dread getting sick in winter? Try upping your exercise routine.

Doing at least two and a half hours of vigorous exercise such as running, fast cycling or competitive sports each week – or 20 minutes each day – can reduce your chances of developing the flu or flu-like illness, research by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has found.

“We’re really interested in the preliminary findings around fitness activity and flu-like illness, as exercise is something that everyone can do to reduce your chance of having flu,” said researcher Dr Alma Adler.

"We need to treat this result cautiously as these are preliminary findings. However, they are consistent with findings for other conditions and really show the health benefits of exercise.”
