Meet the joggers and walkers of Melbourne’s Tan track

The Tan track is a jogger's Mecca, with runners and walkers pounding the pavement morning and night.

Here, nine regular Tan runners and walkers tell us what keeps them tying their laces and getting out and active on this iconic Melbourne track.

What is your name? Glenn

Why do you run? Mostly for general wellbeing and fitness. We’ve got tough mudder coming up so I’m trying to make sure I can survive 20kms without a lung collapsing!

How often do you run? Probably about two or three times a week on a good week.

How far do you run? Depends how I’m feeling in the morning – anywhere between 5 and 13kms.

What is your personal best around the Tan? 22.30

What do you enjoy about running? Being active, getting outdoors. Before getting locked up indoors at work, it’s always good to get out and make the most of the day.

Do you have any running goals? My running goal would be to survive Tough Mudder. It’s 20kms and 20 obstacles – a decent goal if I can accomplish it.

What don’t you leave the house without? Definitely skins, they help my recovery. Decent shoes, of course. Skins and shoes and I’m a happy man.

What celebrity would you like to run with? Jen Hawkins, I reckon she’d give me some good motivation to keep up!

What is your name? Allan

Why do you run? It’s easy to do, put on a pair of shoes, get outside and go.

How often do you run? Depends when you ask me. In the last few weeks it’s been two or three times each week. Before that, maybe once a week.

How far do you run? Minimum 5kms, today we’ve done 9kms and we’ve still got one to go.

What is your personal best around the Tan? 22.30

What do you enjoy about running? It’s a social thing for me. I can’t run on my own, I like having someone there to push me, to run with when I’m feeling slow.

Do you have any running goals? I always try and keep under 6 min/km. I’m quite OCD, I like even numbers so being under 6 is always a goal.

What don’t you leave the house without? I just got a pair of skins, they’re new for me and are really helping. A pair of good trainers means your feet aren’t sore the next day.

What celebrity would you like to run with? Lisa Kudrow from Friends doing the crazy run. Or Usain Bolt, I know he’s a sprinter but I’d like to see him over a longer distance.

What is your name? Amy

Why do you walk? I walk because of my dog and just to try and stay healthy.

How often do you walk? I’m a Fly In Fly Out miner, so I work 8 days on, 12 days off, 12-hour days. I don’t get much time for exercise but try to whenever I can on my breaks.

How far do you walk? Maybe 3-4kms.

What do you enjoy about walking? Being outside, especially when it’s a lovely day. I try and stick to parks and things rather than pathways.

What don’t you leave the house without? Runners, sports bra, lots of treats and poo bags for my dog.

What celebrity would you like to walk with? No idea! Maybe Michael Klim, he’s pretty cool and is a mate of mine from back when I used to swim.

What is your name? Trevor

Why do you walk? General health. As you get older, you’ve got to keep fit and well and keep the weight off. If you become sedentary, it’s not very healthy.

How far do you walk? I try and walk about four kilometres every day, at least, and living between here and Queensland, it’s fairly easy to do. The climate is always good.

What do you enjoy about walking? I think it’s a great time to wander along and think, it clears your head. It’s lovely to get out and enjoy the day.

Do you have any walking goals? Essentially weight management. By getting out and wandering around I can keep the weight down and life is good.

What don’t you leave the house without? I basically do up my shoes so I don’t trip over, wear whatever I find in my cupboard and away I go. No particular fashion.

What celebrity would you like to walk with? Nelson Mandela or Malcolm Turnbull, I think he’d be good fun to walk with and have a chat to. Anyone with a story.

What is your name? Geoff

Why do you walk? Pleasure, health and wellbeing. I feel better if I walk in the mornings.

How often do you walk? Everyday that I can. I don’t work on Fridays so I usually work in the mornings but during the week I walk after work.

How far do you walk? In the mornings around 10kms. When I walk after work it’s usually about 6kms.

What do you enjoy about walking? I love it. On a beautiful morning it’s just great to get out, I feel better all day. If the weather’s bad and I can’t walk, I sort of feel depressed all day.

What don’t you leave the house without? Decent shoes and the rest just depends on the temperature. In Melbourne you never really know – it’s usually a good idea to have an umbrella!

What celebrity would you like to walk with? This morning I’d love to walk with James Hird, I’m wondering if he’ll be exercising around here for the next little while.

What is your name? Joyce

What celebrity would you like to walk with? Not sure, I’ve never thought about it!

What is your name? Nick
