M is for microbes

Microbes are tiny single-cell organisms numbering 100 trillion and counting.

The human body plays host to a complex universe of bacteria that spend their time clustered in the digestive tract of the human body. The vast majority live in the large intestine, a world that is totally dark and oxygen deprived. Living off the food and chemical scraps that escape digestion, thousands of different species of bacteria fight for survival. Yet these bacteria play a vital role in human health.
Beginning from early in life, the microbes living in the human gut interact with and control important aspects of the immune system. Everyone has unique differences in the bacteria living in their large intestine, however the key to a healthy bowel appears to be a diet that contains many different foods, is rich in dietary fibre and includes healthy pro-biotic bacteria.
Foods high in dietary fibre you can include in your diet include wholemeal cereals such as Weet Bix or Vita Brits, wholegrain breads, fruits and veggies, beans and lentils.
Some yoghurts are a great source of pro-biotic bacteria – be sure to read the label.
