Bright Hearts

Design and medicine combine to help sick kids.

The BrightHearts project is a research collaboration between interaction-designer Dr George Khut and Dr Angie Morrow from Westmead Hospital in NSW. The aim of BrightHearts is to design and evaluate the effect of heart-rate controlled interactive artwork to assist in the management and reduction of stress and anxiety in children undergoing painful clinical procedures. The target population for the study is children aged between seven and eighteen who undergo recurrent procedures including burn dressing, veinipuncture and deep tissue injections. The study examines how measuring small changes in a person’s body and displaying these changes back to them via interactive artwork can help them learn to influence the behavior being measured.
