A new study emphasises the importance of eating five serves of veggies a day.
99 per cent Australian adults are eating vegetables on a daily basis – the highest rate of daily veggie consumption in the world.
But although we’re eating our greens regularly, we’re not quite eating enough of them, with over 90 per cent not meeting the recommended daily intake.
These insights were revealed by a recent survey by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Health at a Glance 2013 study looked at 28 countries around the world and found that on average across all countries, 64 per cent of men and 73 per cent of women are eating vegetables every day. Korea, New Zealand, Ireland and Switzerland rounded off the top five countries with high rates of vegetable consumption.
AUSVEG, Australia’s leading horticultural body, says this research is a great reminder of the importance of getting in your five servings of vegetables each day.
“Research continues to show that a diet rich in vegetables can assist with the prevention of a wide range of health problems. A high intake of vegetables, for example, may help to reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease, maintain cognitive brain function and even assist in the fight against cancer,” says AUSVEG spokesperson Cameron Brown.
“It is also interesting to note that in almost all of the nations that participated in the study, vegetable consumption was higher in women than men, so Australian males in particular should ensure they are consuming adequate levels of vegetables.”
