Restricted Services
A Restricted Service is any service listed in the Medicare Benefits Schedule and that is not listed as an Included Service or an Excluded Service on your cover.
The Benefits for Restricted Services will generally not be adequate to cover the full cost of treatment in private hospitals (and some public hospitals), including day hospital facilities, and may leave you with significant out-of-pocket expenses.
Further, we do not pay any Benefits towards the cost of labour wards or operating theatres associated with the provision of a Restricted Service.
However, the cost of No-Gap Prostheses on the Federal Government's Prostheses Schedule will be fully covered. For more information, please call 132 331.
Public hospitals
For Included Services, Basic Visitors Cover covers the full cost of overnight accommodation charges in a shared or private room.
For Same Day Admissions, for Included Services, Medibank Private will cover the full cost of a shared room only.
Any charge above your Benefit will form part of your out-of-pocket expenses.
Prescription only pharmaceuticals – important information
Most international visitors to Australia are not eligible for subsidised pharmaceuticals under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
Your Basic Visitors Cover pays limited benefits for pharmaceuticals while you are an admitted patient in a Members' Choice hospital or a public hospital and are receiving treatment for an Included Service
This means you may incur significant out-of-pocket expenses if high cost pharmaceuticals are required for your treatment.
For more information, please see the Visitors Cover Membership Guide.
Medical cover
Basic Visitors Cover provides Benefits for medical services, either in or out of hospital that are listed under the Medicare Benefits Schedule and provided by a Registered Medical Practitioner. The Medicare Benefits Schedule covers most medical procedures and treatments provided by Registered Medical Practitioners.
We will pay Benefits equivalent to 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule fee. This is the amount declared by the Australian Government as the standard medical fee for the payment of Medicare Benefits. You will have to pay any additional cost if the doctor charges more than the Benefits we pay you. Benefits are not payable where a service is not listed in the Medicare Benefits Schedule.
If you're eligible for Medicare, Benefits are not payable under Basic Visitors Cover for professional services for which a Medicare benefit is payable.
Note: Our Basic Visitors Cover does not include extras. However if you'd like to be covered for services like dental, physiotherapy, chiropractic, please refer to Optimal Visitors Cover or Essential Visitors Cover.
