Our Members’ Choice Network enables us to provide greater value to our Members with discounts, capped fees or by paying higher Benefits for treatment.

Members’ Choice Hospitals

If you need to go to hospital, it makes sense to choose one from our Members’ Choice Network as you will be covered for a range of related expenses. You may also save on your out-of-pocket expenses.

With Members’ Choice, you can choose from a range of accredited private hospitals across Australia where you can receive value-for-money. When you visit a Members’ Choice Hospital you can take advantage of the capped fees we have negotiated.

The advantages of Members’ Choice Hospitals

By visiting a Members’ Choice Hospital you can also expect

  • Convenient billing for the payment of Benefits, with your invoice sent directly to Medibank Private.
  • To be informed of any out-of-pocket expenses prior to admission, where possible.

What you can expect from Members’ Choice Hospitals

Our Members’ Choice Hospitals are required to be accredited, therefore you can expect:

  • Pre-admission advice, for planned treatment, to help you understand what to expect from your stay in hospital.
  • Discharge planning advice covering aspects such as medication instructions and scheduled follow-up appointments and services.

What you’re covered for at Members’ Choice Hospitals

At the vast majority of Members’ Choice Hospitals you will also be covered* for expenses related to:

  • Private hospital accommodation.
  • Private room (where available and applicable).
  • Same Day Admission.
  • Intensive care.
  • Theatre fees.
  • In-hospital services to aid your recovery such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
  • Devices such as crutches and braces to aid your recovery while in hospital.
  • Local phone calls, TV and access to newspapers, where available.

* Depending on your level of cover and subject to out-of-pocket expenses.

Limited out-of-pocket expenses at Members’ Choice Hospitals

In a Members’ Choice Hospital you may need to pay some out-of-pocket expenses, but these should be limited to:

  • Your Excess (if applicable).
  • Co-payment for hospital accommodation (co-payments apply to First Choice Saver Hospital and Smart Choice Hospital cover only).
  • Any difference between your doctor’s charges (including pathology and radiology fees) and the Medicare Benefits Schedule fee not covered by GapCover or our arrangements with medical practitioners.
  • Any pharmaceuticals (including drugs issued on discharge from hospital) not covered by our agreement with the hospital.
  • The gap for Surgically Implanted Prostheses and other items on the Federal Government’s Prostheses List.
  • Surgically Implanted Prostheses and other items not on the Federal Government’s Prostheses List.
  • Costs for procedures not recognised for Medicare benefits purposes, for which significantly lower Benefits, or no Benefits, may apply. Please note that no Benefits are payable for cosmetic surgery.
  • Costs for services not covered, or fully covered, by our agreement with the hospital.
  • Costs for services, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, not covered in a small number of Members’ Choice Hospitals.

Visiting a non Members’ Choice Hospital

If you visit a non Members’ Choice Hospital you may incur significant out-of-pocket expenses. These expenses may vary between hospitals and are typically not subject to a maximum limit.

Members’ Choice Extras Providers

With Members’ Choice you can choose from a range of extras providers from our Members’ Choice Network across Australia, including dentists, dental prosthetists, optical retail outlets, physiotherapists, chiropractors, naturopaths and acupuncturists.

For extras services provided by Members’ Choice Providers, Members can take advantage of the capped fees and may receive higher Benefits than if they were treated by a non Members’ Choice Provider (subject to Annual Limits and Sub-limits).

If you have extras cover and choose to be treated by a Members’ Choice Extras Provider you may get more from your cover.

For example, for General Dental, you have the opportunity to receive an examination, scale and clean and fluoride treatment (if clinically necessary), at no out-of-pocket expense twice each Calendar Year at a Members’ Choice dentist.

We have also negotiated great deals with our Members’ Choice optical retail network, including:

  • 20% minimum discount off the normal retail price of frames.
  • 15% minimum discount off lenses, contact lenses, add-ons and sunglasses.
  • No out-of-pocket expenses on a selected range of glasses for most Members (subject to Annual Limits and Sub-limits).

For services provided by Recognised Providers who are not with the Members’ Choice Network, Benefits are payable at a fixed amount (for most services or items) and this amount varies from State to State. Benefits are only paid for extras services provided by Recognised Providers.

Members’ Choice Extras Providers are limited in number and may not be available in some areas.
