About Ambulance Cover

Why Medibank Private Ambulance Cover?

Medicare does not provide cover for ambulance transport and unfortunately, in many instances, this is not discovered until after someone has used the service and received a bill.

The good news is that Medibank Private Ambulance Cover offers you the protection and peace of mind you need, at an affordable price.

What's covered?

Ambulance Cover provides Benefits for the full cost of ambulance transport when provided by an ambulance service approved by Medibank Private in following services:

  1. it is medically necessary for you to be admitted to hospital (medically necessary means that, due to the patient's medical condition, ambulance transport is necessary as they could not be transported by any other means).
  2. you need immediate medical attention at a hospital or other approved facility
  3. as an admitted patient, you want to be transferred from one hospital to another, eg. to a hospital closer to home.
  4. an ambulance is called for you, but you do not subsequently need to be taken to hospital.

A seven day Waiting Period applies before you become entitled to Ambulance benefits.

What's not covered?

Medibank Private does not provide Benefits for ambulance charges when:

  • it is not medically necessary for you to be transported in an ambulance (except as set out in paragraph ‘c' above). For example, transportation from your home to a hospital or other health care facility when you are able to take alternative transport is not covered, or
  • your transfer is at the request of a public hospital because the hospital does not have the medical facilities to treat you (these costs are usually covered by the public hospital requesting transfer).

Do you live in Western Australia?

Members with Western Australia Ambulance Cover are required to contribute a $100 co-payment towards the cost of each use of non-emergency ambulance transport rendered by the ambulance service in Western Australia. Non- emergency use is determined by the relevant ambulance service provider eg. inter-medical facility.

Are you already covered?

State Government ambulance transport schemes operate in NSW, ACT, QLD, TAS and WA:

  • if you live in NSW or ACT, and already have hospital cover, ambulance cover is provided through an ambulance levy included in your premiums (this levy is sent on your behalf to the relevant State ambulance scheme).
  • arrangements in QLD and TAS provide for free ambulance transport for eligible people
  • in WA, eligible residents aged 65 or over are entitled to either free or subsidised ambulance services.

Federal Government Rebate

The Federal Government 30% Rebate on private health insurance makes health cover more affordable for eligible Member by reducing your health cover premiums. It's generally the same for everyone under 65, but increases as you get older:

  • 30% off your premium for those aged 64 or under
  • 35% off your premium for those aged 65 – 69
  • 40% off your premium for those aged 70 or over.

Members are entitled to the 35% or 40% Rebate as soon as at least one individual on the Membership fits into either of these age categories.
